Who is Care For

SilverBirch Healthcare provides exceptional domiciliary care services for individuals aged 18 and over, supporting a wide variety of needs and lifestyles. Whether you require temporary support, full-time assistance, or anything in between, we are here to help. Our flexible services range from quick check-in calls and shorter visits, increasing in 15-minute intervals, to full live-in care for those who need round-the-clock support. We also offer overnight care, which doesn’t necessarily require 24-hour service, providing peace of mind for those who may need extra support during the night.

We specialise in helping individuals with chronic conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as those recovering from surgery or injury. For clients and families facing end-of-life challenges, we provide compassionate palliative care to ensure that loved ones can spend their final days at home with dignity. We also support individuals whose families live far away and want reassurance that someone is checking in regularly to ensure their well-being.

Our carers are highly trained to assist clients with diverse needs, including personal care, medication management, mobility support, and companionship. They are equipped to handle a variety of circumstances with professionalism, empathy, and respect. At SilverBirch Healthcare, we understand that every person’s situation is unique, which is why we work closely with you and your loved ones to create a care plan tailored to your preferences and needs. Our mission is to provide care that enhances your quality of life, supports your independence, and brings comfort and confidence to both you and your family.

How Care Works

At SilverBirch Healthcare, we strive to make the process of arranging care as smooth and supportive as possible. It all begins with an enquiry—whether you contact us by phone, email, or through our website. Once we’ve discussed your needs, we’ll arrange a free assessment at a time that suits you. This no-obligation visit is an opportunity to explore your situation, provide helpful advice, and suggest adjustments you can make in your home to improve safety and comfort. If you’re not yet sure whether you need care, this step can be invaluable in helping you make an informed decision.

If you decide to proceed with care, we’ll work closely with you to agree on the start date and discuss the best times for visits. SilverBirch Healthcare is one of the few care companies that guarantees set visit times, with a 15-minute lead way on either side to account for potential traffic or roadworks. If a carer will be delayed longer than 15 minutes, you’ll receive a phone call to keep you informed.

Once care begins, our commitment to your satisfaction doesn’t stop there. We carry out a one-week check-in to ensure everything is running smoothly, followed by a full review after one month. Additional reviews take place at the three-month and six-month marks, with regular six-monthly reviews thereafter. However, we’re always ready to revisit your care plan sooner if your circumstances change or if you feel adjustments are needed.

At SilverBirch Healthcare, we’re dedicated to delivering not just exceptional care, but also the peace of mind that comes from knowing you or your loved ones are supported every step of the way.

Dehydration

Dehydration is a common concern for loved ones, particularly among older adults or those with certain health conditions, but there are effective ways to address it. At SilverBirch Healthcare, we can help by monitoring daily fluid intake and making changes to the diet that encourage hydration. Foods with high water content, such as soups, yogurt, watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges, can be easily incorporated into meals. We also ensure drinks like water, herbal teas, and diluted fruit juices are readily available and encouraged throughout the day.

In addition, we work with Jelly Drops, an innovative company providing a unique and engaging solution to hydration challenges. Jelly Drops are bite-sized, sugar-free water gels that are easy to handle and appealing to eat, especially for individuals who may struggle to drink enough fluids due to mobility or cognitive difficulties. Created with input from dementia caregivers, they are designed to make staying hydrated more enjoyable and manageable.

By partnering with companies like Jelly Drops and tailoring care to meet individual needs, SilverBirch Healthcare helps ensure your loved ones stay hydrated, healthy, and comfortable. For more information about Jelly Drops, please visit their website via the link below.

Monitored Dosage Systems

Managing medications can be a complex task for elderly individuals, particularly those with memory challenges or multiple prescriptions. Tools like blister packs and other monitored dosage systems (MDS) are designed to simplify this process and promote safety. Blister packs, which are prepared by pharmacies, organise medications into clearly labelled compartments for specific days and times. These are the only systems from which SilverBirch Healthcare carers can administer medications, ensuring strict adherence to regulations. Other MDS, such as family-filled organisers, can only be handed to the client by our carers, but we can still provide reminders and encouragement to help them stay on track.

For individuals with memory issues, advanced electronic MDS offers additional benefits. These systems release the correct dose at the scheduled time, with compartments that only become accessible when needed. They also emit an alert sound to remind users to take their medication, significantly reducing the risk of missed or incorrect doses. While SilverBirch Healthcare carers cannot administer medication directly from these systems, we can support clients by encouraging their use, monitoring adherence, and keeping families informed of any concerns.

Blister packs and other MDS systems also make it easier to track medication levels and identify missed doses, allowing for timely refills and adjustments. By incorporating these tools into our care routines, we help clients maintain independence while offering families peace of mind. At SilverBirch Healthcare, our carers are dedicated to supporting safe, consistent, and personalised medication management for every individual.

Locked Boxes for Medication

Locked medication boxes are a vital tool for ensuring the safety of elderly individuals, particularly those with memory issues or cognitive impairments that can lead to accidental misuse of medications. For individuals with conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s, the risk of taking medications multiple times a day, or mistakenly administering their partner’s medication, can be a serious concern. Locked medication boxes provide a secure way to store medications, preventing these types of incidents. These boxes can be opened using a key or a code, ensuring that only authorised individuals, such as caregivers, have access to the medication. This added security helps reduce the risk of overdosing or confusion, providing peace of mind for both the individual and their family.

Locked medication boxes are also particularly helpful for those with a history of substance abuse, as they limit access to medications, reducing the potential for misuse. By restricting the ability to access medication outside of scheduled times, these boxes ensure that medications are taken as prescribed, promoting safety and helping individuals maintain better control over their health. For families and caregivers, these boxes provide an extra layer of protection, allowing them to manage complex medication schedules and minimise the risks associated with misuse.

At SilverBirch Healthcare, we fully support the use of locked medication boxes as part of a personalised care plan. Our carers can access these boxes with the appropriate key or code, ensuring medications are administered correctly and on time. They are trained to follow the prescribed medication schedule, providing reminders and monitoring usage to ensure adherence. This approach helps our clients stay safe, independent, and in control of their health, while also giving families confidence that their loved ones are being cared for with the utmost attention and responsibility.

Cameras for Falls

Installing security cameras both outside and inside the home can be a valuable tool for ensuring the safety and well-being of elderly individuals, particularly those who are at high risk of falling or who may need extra support with security. For exterior areas, cameras can act as a deterrent to potential intruders while also providing a layer of security for families. For elderly individuals who live alone, the presence of cameras can give both them and their loved ones peace of mind, knowing that the home is monitored 24/7. Whether it’s a front door camera, a camera monitoring the driveway, or motion-activated cameras around the yard, exterior cameras help ensure that anyone who approaches the property can be seen and recorded.

In addition to external cameras, placing cameras inside the home in key areas such as hallways and near stairs is an effective way to monitor high-risk fall zones. Stairs, narrow hallways, and areas where people frequently move can be particularly hazardous, especially for those with limited mobility, poor balance, or cognitive impairments. Cameras installed in these high-risk areas allow caregivers or family members to monitor the individual’s movements and respond quickly if there is a fall or accident. This setup can also be helpful for caregivers who may not be present at all times but want to ensure their loved ones are safe.

While security cameras can provide reassurance and help ensure quick responses in emergencies, it’s important to use them with respect for privacy. At SilverBirch Healthcare, we understand the balance between security and dignity, so we encourage the use of cameras in a way that supports the individual's needs without compromising their comfort or privacy. We also emphasise the importance of family and client consent in installing cameras, ensuring that everyone involved is comfortable with their use. When placed thoughtfully, cameras not only provide an extra layer of safety but also enhance the overall care plan, giving families confidence that their loved ones are protected from both security threats and physical risks inside the home.

Sara Steady

The Sara Steady is an innovative piece of equipment designed to assist individuals with low mobility in safely transitioning from a seated position to a standing one. This device is especially useful for elderly individuals or those with mobility challenges who may struggle with standing up from a chair or bed without assistance. The Sara Steady provides the necessary support to help individuals rise and sit with minimal strain, reducing the risk of falls and promoting greater independence. It is equipped with a sturdy frame, ergonomic handles, and a seat that helps users maintain proper posture and alignment while standing.

At SilverBirch Healthcare, we incorporate the use of the Sara Steady into our care plans for individuals with limited mobility. It’s particularly beneficial for clients who experience difficulty standing up due to weakness, arthritis, or neurological conditions. The device offers a safe and controlled way for clients to stand up, alleviating the physical strain on both the individual and the caregiver. The Sara Steady is designed to move with the user, providing smooth assistance while ensuring comfort and safety. This helps to avoid sudden jerks or falls, which can occur when standing unsupported.

The Sara Steady not only promotes safety but also encourages independence. For individuals who may otherwise rely on caregivers for assistance with standing, using the Sara Steady gives them the ability to participate in their daily routines with greater ease. This sense of independence can improve overall well-being, boost confidence, and reduce feelings of frustration or reliance on others. At SilverBirch Healthcare, we ensure that our carers are fully trained in the safe use of the Sara Steady to provide the highest level of support for those with low mobility, helping to maintain a dignified and active lifestyle for our clients.

Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are an essential tool for individuals with mobility challenges, offering an important means of independence and improving quality of life. Whether electric or manual, wheelchairs provide the support needed for individuals to get out and about, engage with their communities, and enjoy activities outside of the home. Electric wheelchairs, in particular, offer enhanced independence, allowing users to navigate their surroundings with minimal effort. These chairs are ideal for individuals who have limited strength or stamina, as they can move freely without needing assistance from a caregiver. With easy-to-use controls and adjustable settings, electric wheelchairs enable users to go to various places, from local shops to parks, all with ease.

For those who prefer a non-electric option, manual wheelchairs are just as beneficial. Many models are lightweight and foldable, making them easy to transport and store. These can be a great option for individuals who still have the strength to propel themselves but may need assistance with longer distances. The foldable design also makes it simple for families and caregivers to take the wheelchair along for outings, such as to a high street, shopping centre, or day centre. SilverBirch Healthcare carers are available to assist with these outings, ensuring that clients can enjoy a day out without worrying about mobility challenges. Our carers can help with both manual and electric wheelchairs, ensuring that clients remain comfortable and safe during outings.

Wheelchairs also make it possible for loved ones to attend family events, whether it’s a celebration, reunion, or holiday gathering. For those with limited mobility, having a wheelchair provides an opportunity to remain involved and present with family and friends. This helps maintain social connections and ensures that individuals can enjoy important events, reducing feelings of isolation. At SilverBirch Healthcare, our carers are fully trained to assist clients in using wheelchairs safely and comfortably, offering the support needed to maintain a vibrant, active lifestyle while ensuring the highest level of care and independence.

Profile Beds

Profile beds are a highly beneficial piece of equipment for elderly individuals, offering safety, comfort, and enhanced mobility for those who may have difficulty getting in and out of bed or who spend extended periods in bed due to health conditions. These beds are adjustable, allowing the head, legs, and height of the bed to be easily raised or lowered. This adjustability not only helps the individual find a comfortable sleeping or resting position but also makes it easier for caregivers to assist with personal care tasks. For individuals with limited mobility or those recovering from surgery, profile beds can make daily life more manageable and reduce the risk of injury.

One of the key advantages of a profile bed is its ability to promote independence. By adjusting the height of the bed, individuals can safely get in and out without relying as heavily on caregivers. The adjustable positions also improve circulation, reduce the risk of pressure sores, and provide relief for those with chronic pain or conditions such as arthritis. For individuals who need support sitting up to eat, read, or watch television, the bed can be raised to a comfortable seated position, helping to maintain a sense of normalcy and control over their daily routine.

Profile beds also make caregiving easier and safer. The height adjustment feature allows carers to assist clients without straining their own backs, improving the overall quality of care. At SilverBirch Healthcare, our carers are trained to support clients who use profile beds, ensuring they are positioned safely and comfortably. These beds are particularly useful for individuals with complex care needs, as they allow carers to provide assistance with minimal disruption to the client. Whether it’s improving comfort, enhancing mobility, or ensuring safety, profile beds are an invaluable resource for elderly individuals and those who care for them.

Rise Recliner

A rise recliner chair is a versatile and supportive piece of furniture that can greatly enhance the quality of life for elderly individuals or those with mobility challenges. These chairs are designed to provide both comfort and assistance, with a motorised mechanism that helps users transition smoothly from a seated to a standing position. For individuals who struggle with joint pain, muscle weakness, or balance issues, a rise recliner reduces the strain and effort needed to stand, promoting safety and reducing the risk of falls. This added support makes daily activities, such as sitting down for a meal or moving around the home, much easier and less stressful.

The recliner function adds an extra level of comfort, allowing users to find the perfect position for relaxation or rest. Whether they want to sit upright, recline back to watch television, or even lie flat for a nap, the chair’s adjustable settings provide flexibility to meet their needs. This can be particularly beneficial for those with conditions like arthritis, edema, or back pain, as the chair offers ergonomic support and promotes better circulation. Rise recliners are available in various sizes and styles, ensuring there’s an option to suit every individual’s needs and home décor.

At SilverBirch Healthcare, we recognise the benefits of rise recliners and support their use as part of an independent and comfortable lifestyle. For those who have one, our carers can assist with positioning, ensuring the chair is used safely and effectively. Rise recliners not only enhance physical comfort but also contribute to emotional well-being by enabling individuals to maintain independence and engage in their daily routines with confidence. Whether it’s reading, socialising, or simply relaxing at home, a rise recliner is a practical and valuable addition to the home.

Day Trips

Day trips are an excellent way to keep elderly individuals active, engaged, and in good spirits. At SilverBirch Healthcare, we recognise the importance of social interaction, physical activity, and mental stimulation in promoting overall well-being. Whether it’s a visit to a local day centre for activities and companionship, a trip to a shopping centre for some retail therapy, or a peaceful walk in nature, these outings offer a refreshing change of scenery and an opportunity to connect with the world outside the home.

Trips to day centres provide a chance for socialising, participating in group activities, and enjoying a sense of community. From crafts and games to fitness classes or simply chatting over a cup of tea, these experiences can reduce feelings of isolation and create joyful memories. For those who enjoy shopping, a visit to a local high street or shopping centre allows them to browse their favorite stores, pick out personal items, and feel a sense of independence. With the support of our trained carers, clients can navigate these spaces safely and comfortably, ensuring their needs are met throughout the outing.

Nature walks are another wonderful option, offering physical activity and the soothing benefits of fresh air and greenery. Whether it’s a stroll through a park, a walk along a riverside, or exploring a nearby garden, these trips can improve mood, reduce stress, and encourage gentle exercise. Our carers are there to provide assistance and companionship, ensuring clients feel supported while enjoying their time outdoors. These day trips not only enhance physical health but also boost emotional well-being, reminding individuals of the joys of exploring new and familiar places. At SilverBirch Healthcare, we are committed to helping our clients live fulfilling, vibrant lives, and day trips are a key part of achieving that goal.

Altered Diets

Altering diets is a key part of maintaining health and well-being, whether the goal is to lose weight or gain weight. For elderly individuals or those receiving care, tailored dietary changes can significantly improve quality of life by addressing specific health needs, boosting energy, and supporting mobility. At SilverBirch Healthcare, our carers are experienced in assisting clients with these adjustments, ensuring that meals are not only nutritious but also enjoyable and easy to prepare.

For individuals aiming to lose weight, the focus is on creating a balanced, calorie-controlled diet that prioritises nutrient-dense foods. This includes increasing the intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while reducing processed foods and sugary snacks. Simple strategies, such as portion control, healthier cooking methods like grilling or steaming, and incorporating more fiber to enhance fullness, can make a significant difference. Regular hydration and gentle physical activity, where possible, further support weight loss. Our carers can help plan and prepare meals, monitor progress, and encourage clients throughout their journey to healthier living.

For those who need to gain weight, often due to reduced appetite, illness, or recovery, the goal is to incorporate high-calorie, nutrient-rich foods into their diet. Weight gain can help improve energy levels, support mobility, and reduce the risk of frailty or falls. Practical strategies include adding butter or cream to ready-made mashed potatoes, cooking with cream, and using calorie-dense drinks like Ensure or other fortified beverages. These can also be used creatively, such as making porridge with calorie drinks for a nutrient-packed breakfast. Offering small, frequent meals and snacks like nuts, cheese, or avocado can make it easier to increase calorie intake without overwhelming the individual. Our carers work closely with clients to prepare and serve these meals, helping them achieve their weight goals while maintaining a varied and enjoyable diet.

By carefully tailoring diets to individual needs, SilverBirch Healthcare ensures that clients can achieve their desired weight outcomes, whether to improve mobility, boost confidence, or enhance overall health. Our team provides compassionate and practical support to make these changes manageable and sustainable.
